Istanbul is a city that engages all your senses—the call to prayer mixing with ferry horns, the gleam of the Bosphorus, the scent of spices, and the taste of simit. But what about the sense of touch? For a truly hands-on cultural experience, step away from the Grand Bazaar’s storefronts and learn to create your own piece of Turkish heritage with a traditional felt ( keçe ) making workshop.Felt making, turkish crafts, istanbul workshops, creative journey, Istanbul, Turkish Art, Creative Travel, Les Arts Turcs, Hand made, Art Experience

What is Felt (Keçe)?

Felt is one of the oldest textiles known to humanity, a non-woven cloth created by matting, condensing, and pressing wool fibers together using heat, moisture, and pressure. It’s a simple yet magical process that transforms fluffy wool into a durable fabric. For centuries, nomadic cultures in Central Asia (the ancestors of modern Turks) used felt to create their homes (yurts), rugs, clothing, and saddle blankets. It’s a craft deeply woven into the story of Turkey.

The Workshop Experience

Located in the heart of the historic Sultanahmet district, this 2-3 hour workshop offered by Les Arts Turcs is perfect for beginners and those with some artistic experience.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Learn from a Professional: You’ll be guided by a skilled artist who can teach both beginner and advanced techniques. You’ll learn about the different types of wool and the secrets behind this ancient craft.
  • Everything is Provided: You don’t need to bring anything but your enthusiasm. All materials, tools, aprons, and gloves are included. Just show up ready to learn!
  • The Process: You’ll go through the entire felt-making process from start to finish. You’ll lay out the wool, add soap and water, and then the real work begins: the rolling and pressing. This is the most satisfying (and surprisingly physical!) part, as you see the fibers magically bind together to form a solid piece of fabric.
  • Create Your Own Souvenir: The best part? You get to take home a finished item you made yourself! You can choose to create a hat, a bag, a scarf, slippers, or your own design. It’s a unique, personal souvenir far more meaningful than anything you could buy in a shop.
  • A Little Taste of Turkey: While you work, you’ll be offered traditional Turkish tea or water, making the experience feel less like a class and more like a visit with a friend.
